Underfloor heating in a home in Staffordshire

Air source heat pumps

How an Air source heat pump works…

An air source heat pump is an environmentally-friendly alternative to central heating. An outdoor unit harvests heat from the air outside and transfers it to an indoor unit, where it’s used to generate hot water. This can then be used to heat the house, domestic hot water, radiators or under-floor heating. Your indoor unit will much work the same way as your conventional central heating boiler, however it uses heat from the air outside, rather than gas.

The benefits of an Air source heat pump…

  • Heats your home and your water
  • Reduces energy costs
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Less disruptive to install than ground source heat pumps
  • Heat and cool your conservatory – meaning you can use it 365 days a year

An air source heat pump works a bit like your fridge, only in reverse. The process absorbs heat from the outside air and the heat pump compressor then increases the temperature to create useful heat. This solution pays for itself after the first few years and is a great investment in your home.

Air source heat pump FAQs

Can an air source heat pump heat my swimming pool?

Yes, an air source heat pump is the system of choice for most swimming pool owners.

How are the pumps powered?

Electricity powers the pump, but for every unit of electricity used you get between 2 and 3 units of heat – making this an efficient way to heat your home.

Can Air Source Heat Pumps work at low temperatures?

Yes. Our air source heat pumps are designed to still work at temperatures as low as -20C, ensuring that you can continue to enjoy a warm conservatory even in cold winter.

Are Air Source Heat Pumps noisy?

No. Our air source heat pumps are state-of-the-art and quietly efficient. You should expect a noise no louder than a modern fridge freezer.

Can I qualify for the RHI if I install an air source heat pump and/or solar thermal system?

If you use an air source heat pump and/or solar thermal system to solely heat your swimming pool, then you won’t qualify. However, if you also use it to provide heating for the rest of your home, under the current scheme, you can apply for the RHI, which generates a quarterly payment for seven years.
