Amazingly, now is the time to think about insulating your home

With many people enjoying the warm sunny spring days, probably the last thought on their mind is insulating their home.

But Midlands green energy expert Ron Fox said this is the ideal time to upgrade a house or bungalow for a number of reasons.

Firstly, because very few people are thinking about improving the warmth of their home at this time of year, that means householders are far more likely to get a cheaper deal from an installer.

Secondly, the better weather is ideal for working on a home for both the insulation workers and the people living there.

Thirdly, insulation improves energy efficiency and helps the home maintain a comfortable temperature all the year round. It not only keeps rooms warm when it’s cold outside, it keeps the inside cool when it’s warm outside.
Fourthly, quality insulation can protect the home from moisture and condensation problems brought on by the summer heat.

Fifthly, insulation can offer superior soundproofing especially if you suffer from noisy neighbours, blaring TVs, loud telephones or heavy traffic outside preventing you from going to sleep. The applied super foil insulation expands, fills even the smallest of gaps, before setting to form a protective seal around the home, locking in heat and blocking out external noise. It can also reduce airborne pollutants, so creating a more peaceful and restful home.
Sixthly, and most importantly, better insulation can prevent heat loss so saving up to 45 per cent on energy bills.

Ron said one important area to use super foil insulation was the loft, as without it household bills can literally go through the roof. Around a quarter of all heat is lost through an uninsulated roof so the super foil insulation is applied at joist or rafter level and as it dries, it expands and forms an airtight seal.

If the loft is properly ventilated, it also prevents the build-up of mould which can cause damp and condensation.

He said another advantage of using super foil insulation in the loft means it could be turned into another room such as an office, hobby room, a master bedroom or additional storage space.

Ron said for those who live in an older building, post-war pre-fabricated home or a timber or steel framed house, then they should also consider external wall insulation.

For those who have a flat roof and the property is of a certain age, it’s probably poorly insulated. In the winter, warm air escapes leaving the room below the flat roof feeling cold and uncomfortable while in the summer it may feel sticky and too hot because of a lack of ventilation.

One solution may be adding a waterproof rubber roofing membrane which is able to resist high and low temperatures, has a guarantee of 20 years’ life and requires little or no maintenance once it is installed.
