PassivEnergy is the active way to stop wasting energy

Millions of householders are spending hundreds of pounds a year on energy they don’t need, says a Midland expert.

Ron Fox of Noreus says residents are wasting power when they could be taking advantage of new technology to make their homes more efficient.

Examples of throwing money away include radiators blasting away when people go out on the spur of the moment or go on holiday; having a whole cylinder of hot water when they only need a small amount or the time and energy wasted heating up their home with an old fashioned thermostat and boiler control.

Now with a PassivEnergy management system residents can cut their heating costs by up top 23 per cent and get a return of up to 39 per cent on their investments as the same time as reducing their carbon footprint.

Ron said: “Rather than worrying about the temperature on your thermostat this technology understands your heating and hot water needs, so cutting out waste.”

It is a wireless system that oversees your home energy needs online through a monitoring box, sensors in different rooms and a hand-held control.

Instead of guessing what time your boiler comes on  to guarantee a hot shower or a warm kitchen the PassivEnergy system is programmed to work effectively both with your boiler’s performance and the weather outside to give you the water at the right time and the correct temperature you require.

Choosing one of the four buttons on the hand-held control of – in, out, on holiday or sleeping – it means if you are going to bed early the system can be programmed so your heating and hot water systems can go to sleep at the same time as you.

Through your iPhone App it enables you to control the temperature of your home – or an elderly relative’s residence while you are on the move.

If you come home early you can alter the heating system by pressing the in or occupancy button on the control in the house or by using the iPhone App and downloading the PassivEnergy smart heating service from iTunes before you leave the office.

It can also monitor the performance of your solar panels so your washing machine and dishwasher can be switched on at the most efficient time. If there is a fault in the solar panels it even alert alerts your maintenance company.

“Many people would never dream of having a 30-year-old TV because the technology has changed so much in that time,” said Ron, “yet they are still using 30-year-old controls on their boiler.”

The PassivEnergy system can be fitted to most homes provided they have a broadband internet connection and a gas or oil-fired boiler that can be overseen by a standard programmer or controller.

The system costs from £299 up to £2,999 depending on the customer’s needs.

Ron said the system works most efficiently when the roof and walls are insulated as that is where 60 per cent of a home’s heat is lost.

He suggests spray foaming the attic and walls with a system such as the Icynene Insulation System, which is environmentally friendly, non-toxic with a lifetime warranty (www.icynene.com).
